Designer: Charles E. Barber
In
April 1905, long before the exposition officially opened, a dealer
going by the name of D.M. Averill & Co offered the Lewis and
Clark issue for sale. He obtained a quantity of 1904 gold dollars
before the Exposition opened and began advertising them as early
as October 1904. Averill also obtained specimens of the 1905 issue
before anyone else. The price for the 1904 Lewis and Clark went
for $2.50 and the 1905 Lewis and Clark sold for $2.00. He raised
the price of the 1904's on the ground that "These are nearly
exhausted". Later issues of the 1905 specimen where offered
at 6 for $10.00.
